Hi, my name is Myra Brown. This is our dismantling racism site. So often when we talk about racism, there are a thousand definitions that come to mind for most folks. It is important to understand that
racism is not the same as individual race prejudice and bigotry, which are expressions of racism. It is more than that.
We are all racially prejudiced, because it is socialized into every person born into the United States and abroad.
These "tapes" of socialization continue to play in our heads throughout our existence. It's crucial we talk honestly about their impact on our lives and those within the human family.
Institutionalized racism is the collective action of a dominant racial group (intentional or unintentional) at a social, economic, political and cultural level that perpetuates systemic oppression.
So for our conversation we define racism as :Race Prejudice plus the use of power in systems and institutions.
Human beings constructed racism and Humans beings can dismantle it!
